General Description: With this display I am trying to communicate to my audience that this section of the infographic is about the range of time that different coconut water distributors have existed and when they began business. I started with a simple timeline and used an assorted arrangement of company icons, but removed the whole coconut water bottles and switched to using purely the companies logos.

Emulation Description: I have emulated my color model in this display by using the color swatches, and I have emulated my typography model by using teh same fonts and typefaces. I have additionally emulated my visual language model by using the same labeling strategy, as well as the titles.

Displays that exploit the visual potential of time

Critique #1: Memie Huang

For my first version, she preferred it overall because it was easier to track the progression of time moving from left to right. This was lost in the second version. Overall her main feedback was to include more data and information for each data point and create a tooltip-like description for each one like I did in my second version, but simplify it as though it were in my first version.

Model Emulation Feedback

For both versions, Memie thought that I did good a job emulating my color, visual language, and typography models. She thought that the only thing I needed to change was to more closely emulate my visual language model.

Revisions based on this critique

Memie's critique prompted me to add more data about each company onto the timeline. I added the tooltip-like description for each one like she mentioned, and also through doing this tried to more closely emulate my visual language model.

Sources: The data/inspiration for this display came from the following sources...

Critique #2: Bobby Brooks

Bobby preferred my first version overall because it was less cluttered, and he could more easily associate the brands with the dates on the timeline. Including more information on the timeline for each company is definitely the way to go while maintaining the simplicity of the first version.

Model Emulation Feedback

Bobby thought that all of my models were emulated very well in my charts. He enjoyed the blue color on the second version but thought that I should use a different text color, maybe one more closely associated with my color model. The visual language model is also very well emulated he said.

Revisions based on this critique

In Bobby's critique he mentioned that the less cluttered version was the one that he preferred overall, so I tried to maintain a low level of total content in order to keep the infographic uncluttered. I also kept the blue color that he liked but changed it to just be the outline of the tooltip.

Critique #3: Hai

Overall Hai liked both of my charts, just thought that I should use a more consistent logo labeling for the second version, as well as move forward with this version. He also thought that I should move the title out of the center since it looks out of place there.

Model Emulation Feedback

Overall Hai thought that I emulated my color model well, but could do a better job emulating my visual language model. He thought that I should stick with my second version, but change the circles to be rectangles, then make the current rectangles open text tooltips with more text and information for each company. Typography model was also emualted well he said, just need to play around with the text coloring.

Revisions based on this critique

Hai prompted me to use aspects of the second version in my revised version even though the majority of my critiquers wanted me to move forward with my first version. I also decided to stick with the circles on the timeline for the dates since I thought they just looked more appealing overall.

Critique #3: Andrew Joung

Overall Andrew really enjoyed my revision. He thought that my emulations were all strong and that the data was displayed successfully. He wanted to see even more information about each company however, which is contrary to what I originally planned to do with highlighting the time aspect more than the company aspect of the data.

Model Emulation Feedback

Andrew thought that overall I emulated my models well but could use some work emuating my visual language model. My visual language model is becoming incraesingly difficult to emualte in this display however I continue playing around with critiquers suggestions. Specifically Andrew thinks that I should label the same way my visual language model does.

Revisions based on this critique

Andrew's critique prompted me to put lines to connect my tooltip's to the years that they are representing so as to better connect them to the actual timeline. This is also more representative of how things are labeled in my visual language model.

Critique #2: Chris

Overally Chris thought I had a strong time display and that the data was interesting and displayed well. Major suggestion was to change the alignment of the labels so that they are consistent throughout the timeline and more easily associated with the data they represent.

Model Emulation Feedback

Chris thought that I emualted my color model very well but that I need to paly around with the blue outline on the labels. He also thought that I attempted to emualted my visual language model well but that it isn't necessarily working quite yet. He suggested that I move my labels to all be to the same direction from the logo so that they are consistent throughout the timeline.

Revisions based on this critique

Chris's critique made me align all of the tooltips that I have for my display. I aligned them horizontally so that they are all consitsent and more easily discernable from one another, but also so that they have the same sort of 'timeline-flow' as the rest of the infographic.

Critique #1: Bobby Brooks

Bobby thought that this version was a major improvement overall, but wanted me to focus on one specific aspect of the timeline more, either the time, or the company. He said I should choose one and make that data larger, and the converse smaller in order to draw more attention to one in order to create visual hierarchy.

Model Emulation Feedback

Bobby thought that I emulated my color model very well but that I did not do as good of a job emulating my visual language model. He thought that I should focus more on labeling the different points in time to be more representative of the actual time, and not focused on the logo.

Revisions based on this critique

Based off of Bobb'y critique, I decided to change the logos of the companies to be smaller and make the years in teh cirlces larger. This would draw more attention to the actual time than the company. This also added more visual hierarchy to the display.
